We would like to show how mathematics deals with a selection of problems related to economy, physics and the daily life. Among others we have in mind the following questions: -- what is the optimal control and how to control economic processes; -- is it possible for photons to go around a black hole; -- how to park a car as fast as possible; -- how to park a car on a crammed parking lot. Our goal is to present these topics and to explain their physical or geometric description. However, we will stress the mathematical aspects. We want to show the connection between optimal control and mechanics and even the relativity theory. For this purpose we will use the analytical tools like the ordinary differential equations or differential geometry. We want to deal also with the quantitative aspects of the description of these phenomena. This enables us to compare the theory with the experiment. Interested students may have an opportunity to perform numerical computations with packages like scilab. A part of the course will be conducted in a form of workshop. The participants will work out through a discussion the important elements of the mathematical model of the phenomenon we describe. |

Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
(in Polish) Warunkiem zaliczenia jest wygłoszenie przynajmniej jednego referatu w semestrze. Ponadto, na koniec roku, wymagane jest złożenie pracy licencjackiej w systemie APD i jej pozytywne ocenienie przez promotora. |
