ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 4.50 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

obligatory courses

Short description:

During the course, students learn about the structure, properties and functions of organic compounds present in the living cells and basic methods used in modern biochemistry and molecular biology.

Full description:

Structure and properties of key low molecular weight compounds (amino acids, sugars, nucleotides, lipids, secondary metabolites) and macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides), elements of enzymatic catalysis, kinetics of enzymatic reactions, main metabolic pathways, elements of bioenergetics.

Bibliography:

Biochemistry, 8th ed., W.H. Freeman & Co., 2015 (authors J.M. Berg, L. Stryer, J.L. Tymoczko, G.J. Gatto)

BIOS Instant Notes in Biochemistry, 4th ed., Taylor & Francis, 2011 (authors D. Hames, N. Hooper)

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course, the student:

1. Understands the structure and properties of the basic types of biological macromolecules and their components.

2. Understands the importance of experimental work in the field of biochemistry, and knows the principles on which the basic biochemical techniques are based.

3. Applies basic biochemical techniques.

4. Can analyze the results obtained with the use of biochemical methods.

5. Demonstrates the ability to work in a team in a biochemical laboratory.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Classes are credited if the student:

- participated in at least 85% of the sessions (meetings),

- worked during the classes in a way that allows to positively assess the knowledge, skills and social competences obtained during the classes,

- passed the final test.

Conditions for passing the exam (course):

The condition for admitting to the exam is passing the classes.

The exam is in writing (test); the material constituting the content of the lectures is assessed.
