ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 6.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Main fields of studies for MISMaP:

computer science

Type of course:

elective monographs

Prerequisites (description):

practical programming in python, basic statistics, bioinformatics knowledge at the level of the Introduction to computational Biology course, speaking and writing in English

Short description:

During the class the students work in 3-5 person teams and solve one of the two connected problems. Each year it is a different inter-disciplinary problem requiring some programming and data analysis skills. Then, in the second part of the semester, the teams are paired and required to integrate their solutions of two subproblems into a larger software, answering a bigger problem.

The semester ends with presentations of all teams and a symposium with a jury comprised of international scientists. The course is held together with the Sorbonne university and the Heidelberg University.

Full description:

The course is held in conjunction with the other Universities from the 4EU+ initiative.

1. Introduction to the problems to solve, including the presentation of necessary specialist knowledge required to solve the problems at hand.

2. Grouping students into 3-5 person teams and choosing sub-problems for each team

3-9 Working on problem solutions by writing code, choosing method parameters and applying the code to the supplied data.

10. Pairing of the teams

11-14. Integration of solutions within pairs and solution evaluation

15. Presentation of the results during the final symposium
