Full description: |
The course introduces the basics of statistical inference procedures. The course aims to teach basic statistical tests useful in humanities, with a focus on archaeological data. The analysis will be performed using the computer software MyStat - classes will take place in the Faculty of Archaeology computer lab. You will need access to a computer running Windows (Windows XP - Windows 10, the program does not work on Windows 8) to complete the homework. The following elements will be discussed during the class: Introduction to the computer software (MyStat: https://systatsoftware.com/downloads/download-mystat/), graphical presentation of data, basic statistics, frequency analysis (Chi2 test), analysis of differences between means (t-test and non-parametric equivalents), variance analysis (ANOVA and non-parametric equivalents), correlation analysis, distance and similarity measures. All tests will be presented using archaeological examples and archaeological data (when needed, other humanities data will be used) to facilitate interpreting the results. |

Learning outcomes: |
After completing the course, the participant: knows and understands: methodology and principles of statistical analyses in humanities research, with particular regard to archaeological research (P8S_WG.1; P8S_WG.3) limitations of statistical inference and its impact on the interpretation of humanities data, is familiar with the limitations of numerical data in the humanities (P8S_WK.1) can: use statistical analysis to verify scientific hypotheses in a comprehensible manner by presenting the results of statistical tests (P8S_UW.1) is ready to: recognize the importance of statistical research in solving research problems (P8S_KK.3) |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
An unjustified absence from classes is allowed three times. Passing grade is based on homework (performing the discussed statistical test on the chosen data). The grade is calculated based on the average score of all the homework. Individual works can be corrected by presenting a test performed on another dataset. |
