  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Short description:

The classes are integrated with the implementation of apprenticeships in secondary school. Their aim is to prepare students for apprenticeships in geography in secondary school and to enable students to reflect and evaluate the observed and experienced didactic situations.

Full description:

The main aim of the course is to show the practical aspects of the work of a geography teacher in secondary school and to shape students' skills necessary in this profession. The course covers the following topics:

- getting to know the basic documentation of a secondary school with regard to its didactic tasks (including, for example, the school statute, intra-school and subject grading system);

- adapting working methods to the needs and abilities of students with different potential and learning styles;

- planning didactic activities aimed at students' cognitive activity and independence as well as the critical use of various sources of information (mainly internet);

- forming students' cooperation skills as well as shaping communication skills and cultural habits;

- teacher's workshop - proper use of lesson time by the student and the teacher, adapting the communication method to the students' development level;

- conducting an initial diagnosis of students' skills and identifying typical student mistakes in teaching-learning geography;

- undertaking effective cooperation with parents, school staff and the out-of-school environment.

During the classes, it is advisable to observe a geography demonstration lesson in a psecondary school (training school) and prepare and conduct a geography lesson on a given topic by the student, prepare a lesson outline; discussion and evaluation of didactic activities undertaken by the teacher and by the student himself; taking into account in the assessment: the method of communication between the teacher / student and students, the selection of methods, forms of work and didactic means for the content implemented, proper use of lesson time by the student and the teacher, the atmosphere during the lesson, ways of motivating and activating students.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge: Student:

• presents the didactic tasks of the secondary school on the basis of exemplary documents (statutes, school grading system),

• defines the basic concepts of functional didactics,

• discusses the work of a geography teacher in secondary school, including equipment for a geography lab at school

• lists and characterizes teaching strategies and methods and assesses their effectiveness in implementing the content of geography teaching in secondary school,

• discusses how to design tests and other tools useful in the process of assessing students in teaching geography.

Skills. Student:

• designs a geography lesson using various forms, strategies and teaching methods that are particularly activating (e.g. project and problem methods) adapted to the objectives and content of geographic education in secondary school,

• uses a variety of teaching aids to explain natural and socio-cultural phenomena and processes,

• assesses the didactic activities undertaken by the teacher during the observed geography lesson in secondary school, take into account: the method of communication with students, the usefulness of the forms and techniques of work and didactic aids, the use of lesson time, the method of motivating and activating students and the atmosphere during the lesson

• evaluates (self-reflection) own actions taken during the preparation and conduct of geography lessons, taking into account: the method of communication with students, the usefulness of the forms. and techniques used, and didactic aids, the use of lesson time, the method of motivating and activating students and the atmosphere during the lesson.

Social competence. The student is ready to:

• popularizing geographic knowledge among students and developing students' curiosity, cognitive activity and independence as well as logical and critical thinking;

• developing students' cooperation skills, including group problem-solving;

• building a system of values and developing students' ethical attitudes, especially tolerance, openness and respect for any differences.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

During the classes, various methods of education are used: discussion, analysis of source materials (school documents), project, presentation and various forms of work: collective, in groups, individual, observation (hospitalization).

The final grade includes: a) evaluation of the student's activity in the classroom and b) evaluation of his / her work related to the discussed topic.

Class attendance is obligatory; two excused absences are allowed. In the event of absence, the student must achieve the assumed educational goals and perform the necessary tasks in accordance with the instructions given by the lecturer. Estimated time to make up for the arrears is 2 weeks.

Internships:

The classes are integrated with the students' practice in the secondary school in the field of teaching geography, which are provided for in the teaching block program for the masters studies.
