Part A: The aim of the course is to present the diversity and changes taking place in the social structure of Polish cities in relation within European and global context. Participants will learn about the reshaping urban populations resulting from spatial and economic changes, including the evolution of the labour market, and their consequences for the lifestyles, expectations and attitudes of residents. Particular attention is paid to metropolitan areas, settlements of multi-ethnic communities as well as new customs and cultural practices, but the course will also cover changes happening in medium and small towns. The course focuses also on urban demographic diversity, providing the characteristics of children, youth and seniors as urban dwellers and analysis of demographic and social changes and their consequences for urban structures. Part B: The purpose of the course is to reflect on the category of a class, not in the economic sense, but as a category for describing the imagined group with specific sense of value, forms of employment and lifestyle. During the course, contemporary theories and research on space and community will be discussed. Issues such as creativity, suburbanization, gentrification, habitus, free time and working time, the everyday and the 'everynight' will be analysed. Part A: The course is designed to familiarize students with the fundamental theories and research on urban social structure and diverse local environments in large and small urban centers. Participants will also learn about working methods within urban communities. The classes are conducted in the interactive manner and combines lectures, seminar and workshops. The course consists of the following modules: • Social structure of cities and prognosed changes • Multicultural local communities • Urban lifestyles • Different generations of inhabitants The 'Social structure of cities and projected changes' block aims to present contemporary theories and research on the evolution of urban social structures. Students will learn about demographic changes and changes in the labour market as well as their socio-spatial effects in Polish cities within the context of global cities. We will discus class divisions in urban communities, including classic Marxist concept but also consumer (Bauman), cultural (Bourdieu) and housing (Rex) classes. We will present the development forecasts for Polish cities and learn to apply the foresight method used for strategic forecasting in the city. The module on multicultural local communities will enable the participants to get acquainted with the unique results of field research conducted in recent years in multi-religious and / or multi-ethnic local communities. The analyzed case studies of social differentiation help define a set of historical conditions that have a long-term impact on the local social processes and mechanisms of neighbour coexistence. In the lifestyle block, we will focus on the social characteristics of various groups of the cities’ inhabitants - 'white' and 'blue' collars, local economic and cultural elites, but also dwellers of poverty enclaves, peripheral districts and suburbs. We will also talk about "users of the city", ie people who use city services and infrastructure but do not live there permanently, and we will assess their impact on the urban community. The fourth block is devoted to demographic groups usually omitted in the characteristics of urban communities, i.e. children, youth and seniors. Its aim is to learn about planning methods in multigenerational communities through a review of practical solutions for residents of different generations and in the course of workshops. Part B: The course consists of three parts. Every one of them is concentrating on a different aspect of urban life. Part 1. Entanglements The city, like all other elements of the reality we live in, is the result of entanglement of relationships - between people, animals, objects and ideas. These relations - ways of seeing, mutual creation of meanings - will be the subject of reflection in this part of the course. Part 2. Classes The second part of the course will focus on a discussion about the category of class and how it functions in contemporary discourse. Issues such as forms of work, their impact on the functioning of the city or space and its class dimension will be analysed. Part 3. Lifestyles The third part of the course will be an attempt to supplement and broaden theoretical considerations and apply them to examples of urban space and practices related to work and free time, the everyday and the 'everynight' in the city. |
