  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Short description:

The Urban Management course combines academic and practical approach, challenging students to apply the latest theory, scientific findings, and new management methods to help solve real-world governance and policy questions in large cities.

Full description:

Urban Management combines theory with practice. The course offers a deeper understanding of the powers at work in cities, a practical focus and worldwide experience connected with international urban research. Through its comprehensive approach, the programme takes the economic, social, physical, managerial and political aspects of urban management and development into perspective.

The seminars, in addition to discussing legal conditions for the management of large cities / metropolies, focus on practical issues and problem solving.

An important part of the course are guest lectures from academics and practicioners from foreign countries, providing with different perspectives.

The programme includes issues such as:

Managing large structures

Economic theory and its application to public sector decisions

Urban infrastructure, investment and development

Urban policy, planning and evaluation

Access to education, culture and sport

Leadership in large cities

Civic participation, negotiation and decision-making

Public transport

Public services

Migration, homelessness

Environmental pollution

Waste management

Smart cities

Governance and cooperation with non-profit organisations

Budget and financial planning

Participatory budgeting

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Presentation during seminar (group or individual), or essay on a chosen topic.
