  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

The objective of the lecture is to perform an analysis of canon law which is understood as a specific type of the contemporary legal system. The focus would be upon the specific original features of canon law as opposed to different legal systems of international/transnational character. A detailed analysis of canon law institutions would be performer in order to examine the relevant provisions of the Code of canon law. The examination of legal provisions would be supplemented with the presentation of current doctrines and theories of canon law.

Short description:

The aim of the lecture is to provide basic information and knowledge concerning canon law within the institutional, organizational, procedural and legal structure of the Catholic Church. The main focus is based upon the legal analysis of the Code of canon law (1983). The analysis would be supplemented with comparative perspective, based on other systems of law (international, transnational legal regimes) and with a philosopical interpretation of current doctrines and theories of canon law.

Full description:

1. The historical development of canon law. Canonical form, signs and distinctions. The Code of canon law. A canonical constitution for the Church.

2. The origins, method and instruments of canon law. Interpretation of canon law.

3. Hierarchical structures in the Church: the Pope and the college of bishops. Roman curia. Conferences and synods of bishops. The principle of collegiality.

4. The principal territorial organization of the Church: dioceses and parishes. The law of residence (bishops and priests).

5. Consecrated and apostolic life. Constitutions, religious institutes, secular institutes and societies of apostolic life.

6. Laity: the Christian faithful. Associations of the laity.

7. The teaching function of the Church: preaching, missionary action, religious education.

8. Legal aspects of liturgy. Procedures concerning the sacraments.

9. The governing function of the Church. Offices and power of governance. The organization of canon process. Sanctions in the Church.

10. The debate about the nature of canon law. Freedom and good order in the Church. Canon law as ministry.

Learning outcomes:

After attending the lecture students should be able to recognize the fundamental norms, principles and institutions of canon law. Their knowledge may prove conducive to pursuing further legal curricula. They should improve their comparative analysis skills.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Evalutaion would be based upon participation (80%) in the seminar and active invovement in the class (20%).
