Legal Informatics 1. The subject of legal informatics. Relation to other sciences (statistics, jurimetrics, legal cybernetics, informatics). Sections of legal informatics. 2. Infomation about law. Definition of information (technical, semantics and pragmatic aspects). Content of legal data bases. Role of computer legal retrieval systems in modern society (axiological aspects). 3. Types of retrieval systems. Direct and indirect systems of searching. Typology of indirect systems used for retrieval of legal information. 4. Traditional systems of retrieval (hierarchic classifications and systems of subject headings) and their applications in computer systems. 5. Computer systems of legal retrival (technical aspects, structures of files used for retrival). 6. Index systems (typology, systems of assigning indexes, automatic indexing, files used for retrival - main vocabulary, inverted file, straight file). 7. Full-text systems (files used for retrival - text file, inverted file, straight file, reproduction register). Search instructions (logical and positional operators). Weighting searches. 8. Role of thesauruses in legal retrieval (definition, types of thesauruses). Thesauruses of synonyms (logical and linguistical concepts of symonymity). 9. Hierarchical thesauruses, associative thesauruses, statistical thesauruses, semantic maps. 10. New ideas in searching legal information. Conceptual systems. 11. Efficiency of retrival systems. Types of efficiency. Measures of efficiency. Analysis of users needs. Concepts of relevance and their applicability in searching legal information. 12. Legal intomation systems in the world (LEXIS, WESTLAW, IRETIJ, DATUM, CREDOC etc.). History of introduction of computer legal data bases in USA and Europe. 13. Automatic legal decision systems (ex. CASE). Arificial inteligence in law (expert systems). 14. Computer systems of legal information in European Community (EurLex, Curia, Epoque). 15. Polish legal information retrieval systems (LexPolonica, LEX, Legalis). |

Achieving general information about possibilities of using computers in law in theory and in some part in technics (EUR-LEX). Students should also get knowledge about future possibilities of legal informatics in the field of automatic decision making. |
Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
The subject is credited by the way of oral exam and checking the presence. The activity of the students during lecture is also taking into the consideration. |
