Prerequisites (description): | The course is recommended to students working on their bachelor's or M.A. thesis and to all others who would like to improve their skill of academic writing in the domain of their studies. The program is implemented in two autonomous semester cycles with the selection of topics tailored to the needs of the participants. |

Short description: |
The course is intended for students with a command of the Polish language on the level B2 or C. The course aims at preparing foreign students for writing their bachelor’s or M.A. thesis in Polish. The learners will get to know grammatical structures and vocabulary characteristics of the academic style of writing. Moreover, they will learn the rules of organizing a piece of academic writing. The lessons will combine the elements of a lecture and a workshop on comprehension and writing of academic texts. The participants will be given an opportunity of working on their presentations or thesis. |

During the course, students will learn new items of grammar and vocabulary scheduled for the levels B2 and C adjusted to the special needs of a given group. They will practice spelling and punctuation. They will become familiar with vocabulary characteristics of all types of academic writing, eg. connectives. They will learn the rules of composing a piece of academic writing, adding footnotes, quotations, and a bibliography. They will study the model texts of different structures and content to develop their writing skill and then will be able to improve their presentations or thesis. Class topics (presentation and practical exercises related to the topic often take more than one class): 1. Strategies for effective reading: global, selective, and detailed reading. 2. Basic issues of the construction of a scientific text. - text layout; - paragraph: types and structure; - citations, footnotes, bibliography. 3. Types of texts: - definitions; - classifications; - descriptions; - expressing the cause-effect relationship; - comparisons; - expressing opinions; - data presentation; - reports; - arguments; - summaries. - reviews 4. Exponents of text coherence: conjunctions and logical connectors. 5. Ways of achieving precision and clarity of speech. 6. Improving grammatical, spelling, and punctuation correctness |

Learning outcomes: |
Having completed the course, students can write clear, accurate, and well constructed academic texts on topics from the domain of their studies. They can present their views and arguments or comments. They know how to structure their pieces of writing and make footnotes and bibliography. They know the grammatical structures and vocabulary scheduled for level B2 and above. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
1. A paper prepared outside the classroom - 40%; 2. Short texts written or edited in the classroom - 20%; 3. Home assignments -20%; 4. Attendance and active participation in the lessons - 20%. To get a credit one has to get a grade "pass" (60%) in every category mentioned above. |
