Short description: |
Classes devoted to a broad and multi-aspect overview of the ancient Near Eastern fortifications: Bronze Age (III-II mill. BC) [winter semester] and Iron Age (I mill. BC)[summer semester]. After an introduction (by the lecturer) the participants should present a chosen feature or site (a fortified city/town, some element of defensive archtecture (comparatively), with an analysis and interpretation (context, function, economic aspects, "defensive systems" of regions and countries). |

Themes of the introductory lecture: 1. Terminology/definitions. 2. Oldest fortified settlements - "first cities"? 3. Types of fortified sites (e.g. "old towns" and new foundations; "Kranzhuegeln" of Northern Syria; citadells and forts). 4. Fortification techniques and means (circumvallations, ditches, walls, towers, escarpments and glacis). 5. Defensive and communication functions of the city gates; typology. 6. Building materials; time and lobor, 7. Tactical and strategic role of the defences - local and regional topography, "long walls". 9. "Ideology of fortifications" - iconography and and texts (symbolics of the city walls and gates; prestige functions of the royal fundations). |

Learning outcomes: |
Extned knowledge of the defensive works of the ANE. Ability to analyse and critically interpret the defences in their historical (cultural-symbolic aspects included), strategic and tactical context. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The basis for the evaluation shall be an individual presentation of a chosen feature (or a complex, or an overview of selected elements or attributes), with an interpretation, according to problems and questions indicated in the introductory lecture. |
