  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Short description:

The course is dedicated to Umberto Eco's literary works. All of the author's novels, as well as some of his essays, will be presented and discussed during classes.
Full description:

The purpose of the course is to discuss and analyse Umberto Eco's seven novels, published between 1980 and 2015. First of all, the author's life and academic work will be presented, including his most important publications dedicated to a wide array of disciplines, as well as his studies on pop culture. The main part of the course will be an analysis of Eco's literary works, presented in chronological order: each novel will be discussed within the broader context of the Italian writer's work and of the evolution of this thought and poetics. A particular relevance will be attributed to such topics as the relationship between highbrow and lowbrow culture (and literature), engagé vs. popular fiction, the Postmodernist novel, archetypes of crime fiction, contemporary historical novel, and the motifs of conspiracy theories and the falsification of reality.

The final part of the course will be dedicatod to the students' presentations, connected with their final essays. The subject of each of these essays will be decided with the lecturer during the course.

Wiedza: absolwent zna i rozumie:

K_W02 zaawansowane metody analizy dzieł literackich, w szczególności z końca XX i początku XXI wieku;

K_W09 podstawowe pojęcia i zasady z zakresu ochrony własności intelektualnej i prawa autorskiego.

Umiejętności: absolwent potrafi:

K_U01 czytać ze zrozumieniem teksty w języku włoskim, w szczególności literatury współczesnej (XX-XXI wiek);

K_U02 przedstawić własne poglądy, opinie, dyskutować, prezentować przygotowane zagadnienia w języku włoskim dotyczące literatury XX-XXI wieku;

K_U03 rozpoznawać różne rodzaje tekstów w języku włoskim, umiejscowić je w ogólnym kontekście historyczno-kulturowym (oraz szczególnie w kontekście prozy włoskiej XX-XXI wieku) oraz przeprowadzić ich analizę z użyciem podstawowej terminologii literaturoznawczej i właściwych metod;

K_U04 samodzielnie zdobywać wiedzę i rozwijać umiejętności z zakresu współczesnego literaturoznawstwa włoskiego z wykorzystaniem odpowiednich źródeł (słowników, leksykonów, encyklopedii, tekstów źródłowych, opracowań monograficznych, itp.);

K_U06 napisać oraz zredagować pisemną pracę semestralną w języku włoskim z zastosowaniem odpowiednich metod oraz właściwych źródeł z zakresu literaturoznawstwa włoskiego na przełomie XX i XXI wieku.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The final evaluation will be based on:

- presence (up to three absences will be allowed) and active participation during classes: 25%.

- a presentation (based on the final essay) and discussion during the course: 25%.

- a final essay: 50%.

Details concerning the assessment criteria will be discussed during the first class and enrolled students will receive a file with all the details.
