The aim of this class is to reflect on dreams and their place in culture and individual life. We would take a brief journey on the role assigned to dreams in history of Western civilization. We will also consider examples from other cultures. |

Beginning with Freudian theory, we will look at various approaches to dreams in modern psychotherapy. We will look at the "dreaming process" as it manifest itself in waking life, through fantasies, body experiences or synchronicities. Pondering on a question why it might be important to escape from the rational mind, we will discuss the artistic movements inspired by psychoanalytical understanding of dreams and famous scientific and artistic discoveries that happened during sleep. We will also learn some practical tools that can be used to memorize , understand and use the wisdom of dreams in everyday life. We will discuss following topics: How do we approach dreams in everyday life – personal survey Dreams and memory: how to remember our dreams How real is real? Socially constructed reality and subjective experience. Different levels of perception: consensus reality, dreamland and essence Dreams as direct messages from God: Jacob's ladder and the biblical story of Josef Medieval times and later centuries: dreams on exile Re-discovery of dreams: Freud's "Royal road to unconsciousness” The „work” of the dream – psychoanalitical interpretation C.G. Jung approach to dream work Childhood dreams and life myth Collective unconscious. Symbols in dreams, fairy-tales and art. Surrealism: getting out of the constraints of the rational mind Arnold Mindell: the Dreambody Dreams as the way of life: the case of Senoi tribe. Discoveries in dreams Do we need dreams in XXI century? |

After completing this class a student: - is aware of the various attitudes and approaches to dreams in cultures and history - knows the assumptions and basic methods of dream interpretation in modern psychological theories (Freudian, Jungian, Perls, Mindell) - understands differents functions of dreams - is able to name examples of discoveries that took place in dreams - is interested in „logic” and esthetics of dreams |
