  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

The passed coourse of „Social Anthropology” or different analogous; the passed course of the methodology; investigative interests connected with present culture, ethnic matters, the social differentiation, etc.

Seminar addressed for all graduates' preparing thesis under tutorage of lecturers of Social Anthropology Unit at the Institute of Sociology of Warsaw University

Short description:

The seminar propossal are connected with problems of the present cultural diversification of Poland and of the World, as well as the formation new differentiations, appearing new cultural groups and existence in the new conditions of former distinctions. The matters of the relationships of modernity and tradition will be propeled. The seminar will focus on the present uses of the anthropological theory and anthropological methods in explanation of the cultural diversity. The subject matter can be broadened according to participants proposals, needs and interests. During seminar participants will realize following tasks: the choice of the inquiery subject, the research conceptualization, preparation of research strategy, formulatuing problems and investigative questions, gathering the empirical materials, bibliography, the technics of writing of the work, presentiong and discussing MA thesis chapters.

Is reflective and critical in interpreting the processes occurring in Polish as well as global society and their consequences for social attitudes and institutions

Approaches the choice of a particular theoretical perspective in a reflective and critical way

Can use theoretical categories and research methods in the description and analysis of social and cultural changes in modern societies, as well as their consequences

Can plan and carry out a social study using advanced quantitative and qualitative methods and techniques of social research

Can form an in-depth evaluation of the measures undertaken for the purpose of solving a social problem, based on knowledge and analytical skills acquired

Knows how to interpret the role of culture in the life of the individual and society

Can relate an academic text to the problems of social life and its empirical studies

Can prepare a presentation of a selected problem or study in Polish and in a foreign language

Can argue a thesis using scientific evidence

Can undertake independent activity in public or personal interest

Actively searches for new ways and sources to broaden his/her knowledge and improve professional competences

Independently sets directions of personal development and further learning

Is open to various theoretical and methodological perspectives of social research

Takes responsibility for planned and performed tasks
