Zajęcia mają charakter dyskusji o współczesnych trendach, interpretacjach i nadinterpretacjach podstawowych źródeł do historii relacji późnego Rzymu i plemion arabskich na Bliskim Wschodzie. Analizie będą poddane głównie ustępy z dzieł Ammiana Marcellina, Sokratesa Scholastyka, Hermiasza Sozomena, Prokopiusza z Cezarei, Ewagriusza Scholastyka, papirusy z Nessana i inne. Szczególny nacisk kładziony będzie na nowe odkrycia epigraficzne oraz na próbę rekonstrukcji romanizacji, chrystianizacji, autoprezentacji i struktury społecznej plemion arabskich funkcjonujących w ramach prowincji rzymskich. Poruszane będą też zagadnienia definicji klanu, plemienia, tożsamości społecznej w danej epoce.

Studenci przygotowują materiał wskazany przez prowadzącego na kolejne spotkania. Podczas niektórych spotkań studenci dzieleni są na grupy, które zapoznają się z poglądami wyrażanymi w konkretnej literaturze przedmiotu. Następnie, w trakcie zajęć grupy prowadzą dyskusję, wymieniając argumenty charakterystyczne dla danej opcji interpretacyjnej i starają się określić, która jest bardziej prawdopodobna.

Obecność i przygotowanie do zajęć. Aktywny udział w zajęciach.

Do udziału w zajęciach konieczna jest znajomość języka angielskiego. Mile widziana jest również przynajmniej bierna znajomość języka francuskiego.
