The course examines the role of armed conflict and military power in the development of the United States from the colonial era to the present. It explores major conflicts - from the French and Indian War and the American Revolution through the Civil War, the World Wars, the Cold War and post-Cold War interventions - and their political, social and cultural consequences. Particular attention is paid to the tension between American isolationism and international engagement, as well as to the rise of the United States as a global military superpower.

The course compares immigration and refugee policies in the United States, Canada, and the European Union, focusing on how institutions, legal frameworks, and political debates shape policy outcomes. Students examine approaches to labor and family migration, irregular migration, asylum, and temporary protection through key case studies, including the EU asylum system, Canadian selection programs, and recent US border and asylum policies. Particular attention is given to responses to displacement from Ukraine after 2014 and 2022 and to the role of international norms in shaping domestic migration policy.

This course will introduce a major sub-area of Public Diplomacy, and one which many practitioners feel is underrated: Cultural Diplomacy. This course will examine institutions, methods and big issues in cultural diplomacy. It will mix a historical perspective with the study of contemporary applications, and examples from all over the world.

This course includes actual case-studies on cyber security: data breaches, ransomware issues, good practices in different management areas. There are also simulations and cyber games in which students can play different roles during a cyber attack or other cyber issues.

Eastern Europe is frequently considered as a „different” kind of Europe. A region that is less stable, less democratic, more fragile and requiring consistent attention. Yet, over the last thirty years the region has largely become a part of the economic and political structures of the West. This course aims to shed more light on the political dinamics in the region from both political and economic perspective through historical and problem related approach.

While accenting on the processes of political and economic transformation, democratization and stabilization, the course will acknowledge the role of internal and external factors including: political elites, party politics, privatization, lustration, organized crime, self-government, European integration, great powers interests and regional cooperation and conflicts.

The course will provide an historical overview of the evolution of the Welfare State from the late XIX Century to Nowadays, underlining the different public policies approaches (Poor Laws, Bismarckian insurances, Golden Age, Retrenchment, Social Investment and Austerity) The course will then analyze the different “Models of Welfare State” in the different areas of the Globe, focusing on the works of different scholars.

The course examines the evolution and key directions of the United Kingdom's foreign policy from the decline of the British Empire to the present. It covers the Commonwealth, the United Nations and NATO, European integration, the special relationship with the United States, relations with former dominions, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Brexit, Global Britain, engagement in the Indo-Pacific, and the role of soft power. Special attention is given to the domestic and international factors shaping the UK's global role.

This course aims to access the West to the Global South through various

perspectives of Geopolitical interests of trade and state interests. To achieve this aim, the course

introduces the region and then discusses the region's trade and security, as well as economic and

geopolitical dynamics. Similarly, trade regionalism and trade institutions, great power strategies for

trade, and the overall assessment of the region's West and Global South are also discussed.

This course will introduce students into the key ideas, thinkers and texts of the Western tradition of political thought. It adopts a chronological approach, beginning with Greek origins of political ideas and covering the most important ideational developments in antiquity, Middle Ages and the modern era, concluding with the political aspects of F. Nietzsche’s philosophy.

(Please note that this course does not include ideas born in the 20th century. It is to be followed in the Spring semester by the course “Contemporary Ideologies”).

This course focuses on the modern history of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region,

intended as the geographical area between Morocco and Iran and between Turkey and the Arabian

Peninsula. The course is centred on how the MENA Society dealt with the idea of "modernisation" and

engaged with a growingly globalised World. The course spans from Napoleon's invasion of Egypt (1798)

to the decade following the Arab Spring (2010-2011).

The goals of the course are:

1. Grasping the political and intellectual factors and tendencies that influenced the history of the

MENA region.

2. Relating historical insights to contemporary challenges and situations in an evaluative fashion,

highlighting the significance of cross-disciplinary methodologies.

3. Actively participating in class discussions with both the teacher and fellow students in a

meaningful manner.

This course examines theoretical foundations and practical mechanisms of inclusion in all stages of conflict management - from prevention to resolution and post-conflict reconciliation, with special attention to young people, women, local ownership, and marginalized communities. Students will analyze case studies from one of the largest global peacebuilding networks – Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) and assess the ethical, political, and operational challenges of building inclusive peace. Through practical exercises, students will have a chance to try out the tools used in real-world peacebuilding activities.
