Brief description

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with contemporary population phenomena in their socio-economic context, and also the analysis of interdependence of demographic and economic phenomena on a global, regional and local level. The emphasis will be put on contemporary and future population processes in Poland and Europe. A measurable effect of learning is ability to search for, interpret and present statistical data, knowledge of the main indexes and demographic methods, and ability to write dissertation. Classes combine a form of a lecture and discussion, therein computer workshops. The course is dedicated to students in the first years of economics. In order to pass the course, it is required to participate in classes, prepare a dissertation (about 3000 words), hand over home assignments and pass the final exam.

Brief description

The course presents the evolution of European and world economy and enlarges knowledge about the genesis of modern economy, the institutional constraints of the economic growth. Students know the historical context of the origins and development of the economic theories, course gives a solid foundation for the studies of contemporary micro- and macroeconomics. Student recognize economic and civilizational cycles as well as the evolution of economic sciences during the process of the rise of the modern world. Student is able to evaluate on a basic level the advantages and disadvantages of both, positivist and anti-positivist socio-economic explanations in economic sciences.

The aim of the course is also to develop abilities of critical reading, academic writing and the communication skills. Student is able to prepare an academic paper, formulate research hypotheses and prepare an oral presentation.

Brief description

Understanding the economic point of view is crucial in teaching economics. Reading the works of such authors as A. Smith, J. M. Keynes, and M. Friedman gives a unique opportunity of understanding the way economists conceptualize the economy. The course will be based on lectures combined with in-class discussions. Students will learn the concepts and theories of prominent economists, as well as ways of analyzing and interpreting texts, writing papers and preparing scientific presentations. The pass mark for the seminar is the activity in class (including Power Point presentation), writing an essay and passing the final exam.
