Brief description

A one semester lecture combined with classes is aimed to present the geological history of the Earth, including the history of the planet and of the life on it. A systematic description of the Earth's history is preceded by an introduction focused on the methods of dating the rocks and processes and on stratigraphical classifications. Phanerozoic history of the Earth is interpreted in terms of processes governed by plate tectonics and presents changes of worlds palaeogeography, facies provinces, major tectonic events and evolution of sedimentary basins. Development of continents is illustrated mainly on examples from Europe and North America. Presentation of the history of life embraces main stages of evolution, biological expansion, radiations and crisis, and their relation to palaeogeographical changes and the physical evolution of the planet is discussed.

Brief description

Sedimentology is the study of the formation of sedimentary rocks, deals both with the processes of transport and deposition of sediments, study of modern sedimentary environments, as well as reconstruction of the fossil record of these environments. Subject is a continuation of Physical Geology, introduces new concepts and expanding knowledge of the exogenous processes. Great emphasis is placed on the physical, physico-chemical and biological basis of sedimentary processes. It presents the modern sedimentary environments and based on the principle of uniformitarism teaches rules of the geological reconstruction of paleoenvironments. Provides the basis for the further courses of geological education, especially in the Sedimentary Basin Analysis, Mineral Deposits Geology, Historical Geology and Regional Geology.

Brief description

Fundamentals of soil behaviour is devoted to studies of soil properties and their fluctuations resulting from various factors, such as grain size and mineral composition, chemistry of pore water, type of gas trapped in the pore space, physico-chemical, magnetic, electric, thermal, and capillary properties, as well as structure and texture.

The course discusses the theoretical fundamentals of physico-chemical phenomena taking place on the surface of the soil skeleton. These facts significantly influence the variability of physical and mechanical properties in various types of soils differing in origin, lithology and post-sedimentation transformations.
