Short description: |
The subject of the seminar covers the basic sections of bioinformatics and computational genomics, with particular emphasis on the applied mathematical models and algorithmic methods. We are interested in molecular sequence analysis, comparative genomics, evolution and organization of genomes, phylogenetics and molecular evolution, as well as analysis of data from high-throughput sequencing and other large-scale experimental techniques of modern genomics. |
Full description: |
The fast development of molecular biology caused a growing demand for mathematics and computer science tools, especially methods from such fields as algorithmics, combinatorics, probabilistic methods, and statistics. The seminar's subject focuses on algorithmic and mathematical methods of molecular data analysis and applications of computational methods in the formulation of biological hypotheses. Presentations at the seminar concern current research projects in which the computational biology group participates (http://bioputer.mimuw.edu.pl) and bioinformatics projects carried out in other units of the Ochota campus. Our interests include molecular sequence analysis, molecular evolution and comparative genomics. We are particularly interested in: mathematical models of genomes evolution and genetic diversity in populations, issues related to the reconstruction and comparison of trees and phylogenetic networks, application of the above in metagenomics and infererence of macroevolutionary events such as genomic duplications, hybridizations, recombinations, etc. new algorithms for comparing DNA and protein sequences, techniques for analyzing data from high-throughput sequencing and other large-scale experimental techniques of modern genomics, analysis of newly sequenced genomes. |
