Short description: |
A lecture preparing and supplementing course in the laboratory of Spectacle Optics I and Spectacle Optics II. |
Full description: |
The classes will discuss issues related to materials for spectacle frames and lenses, as well as the technique of measuring and making glasses. Students also learn the computational methods necessary to make glasses with given parameters. 1. History of spectacle optics 2. Spectacles frames (types, materials, dimensions) 3. Measurement of pupillary distance 4. Determining the parameters needed to make single-focal, bifocal and progressive glasses 5. Measurement of the front vertex power of lenses 6. Centering glasses lenses 7. Prismatic correction in glasses 8. Standard for adjusting spectacle frames 9. Repair of eyeglass frames 10. International and European standards for the production of spectacle frames and lenses 11. Parameter verification |

Learning outcomes: |
Knowledge of the history of spectacle optics Knowledge of spectacle frames (types, materials, dimensions) Ability to measure pupillary distance and knowledge of available methods Knowledge of methods for determining parameters needed to make single-focal, bifocal and progressive glasses Ability to measure the front vertex power of lenses The ability to center spectacle lenses The ability to calculate prismatic correction in glasses by moving the optical centers apart Knowledge of the standard for adjusting spectacle frames Knowledge of basic methods of repairing spectacle frames Knowledge of international and European standards regarding the production of spectacle frames and lenses Ability to verify glasses parameters |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
A written exam checking the theoretical knowledge provided during the lecture and the calculation skills necessary to calculate parameters important for making glasses. |
