ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 1.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

(in Polish) Student powinien posiadać podstawową wiedzę związaną z:

- podziałem skał ze względu na genezę i skład litologiczny,

- stratyfikacją skał,

- tektoniką skał,

- geologią czwartorzędu,

- właściwościami fizycznymi minerałów i skał

Short description:

The subject consists of 1 hr. / Wk. During the classes discussed are:

- rules for the selection of geophysical methods used in cartography,

- geological and methodological parameters affecting the quality of the geophysical results.

- geological interpretation of geophysical data.

- stratigraphic geophysics.

- criteria for determining the tectonic zones of geophysical cross sections.

- importance of geophysical data to develop the theory of plate tectonics.

- geophysical surveys in identifying zones of Moho and Conrad discontinuities.

Full description:

The purpose of the course is to familiarize students of the Faculty of Geology with the capabilities of the application of geophysical methods in geological cartography. During the classes discussed are geophysical methods are discussed that allow the identification of:

- occurrence of MOHO zone depth in selected areas of the globe

- depth of occurrence of the crystalline basement in Europe

- geological structure and tectonics of Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments

- hydrocarbon deposits

- salt domes

- satutared zone

- susceptibility of subsurface sediments in the dynamic transmission of vibration.

The lecture material is prepared based on the latest results of geophysical research funded by scientific consortia such as: The Euro-Bridge.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course (lectures and exercises) a student:

- knows the geophysical methods that allow the research of deep structures within the earth's crust such as MOHO zone and the crystalline basement,

- knows the geophysical methods that allow to identify the geological structure and tectonics of Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments,

- interprets the selected results of geophysical surveys, such as time sections, electrical resistivity curves, gravimetry and magnetic data,

- indicates in the time sections the location of potential hydrocarbon deposits

- can evaluate the range of the dynamic oscillations induced by unintentional human activities, transmitted through the ground.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Presence on the classes, checking notes from the lecture and checking the degree of assimilation material.
