Short description: |
1. Metal occurrence in nature (a) ore types and their origin, (b) biogeochemical cycles. 2. Mechanisms of biological sorption and accumulation. 3. Industrial processes dispersing heavy metals into environment - problems with environmental pollution. 4. Organisms able to metallic species transformation. 5. Bioleaching of metals with microorganisms. 6. Biohydrometallurgical processes in industrial scale (technology, economy). 7. Possibility of heavy metal removal from sewage sludge and production of natural, mineral fertilizer. Classes: 1. Microorganisms capable of oxidizing reduced inorganic sulfur compounds, their metabolic strategies and assessment of suitability in biotechnological processes. 2. Leaching of copper from sulphides under acidic and alkaline conditions. 3. Techniques used in biohydrometallurgy on a laboratory scale. |

Lecture: 1. Metal occurrence in nature (a) ore types and their origin, (b) biogeochemical cycles. 2. Mechanisms of biological sorption and accumulation. 3. Industrial processes dispersing heavy metals into environment - problems with environmental pollution. 4. Organisms able to metallic species transformation. 5. Bioleaching of metals with microorganisms. 6. Biohydrometallurgical processes in industrial scale (technology, economy). 7. Possibility of heavy metal removal from sewage sludge and production of natural, mineral fertilizer. Classes: 1. Metabolic strategies of microorganisms used in biohydrometallurgy. 2. Leaching of copper from sulphides under acidic conditions using chemolitoautotrophic bacteria. 3. Characterization of the physiology of selected acydophilic bacteria. 4. Leaching copper under alkaline conditions using chemoorganoheterotrophic bacteria. 5. Identification of organic and inorganic bacterial metabolites. 6. Efficiency assessment and balancing of biohydrometallurgical processes. 7. Laboratory techniques and analytical methods used in biohydrometallurgy. |

The graduate knows in depth the selected theoretical and practical issues in the field of applied microbiology. (S1_W01) The graduate uses and disseminates the principle of interpreting phenomena and natural processes based on empirical data resulting from research and development works. (S1_W02) The graduate knows the principles of research planning and processes using microorganisms based on the achievements of the scientific discipline presented in the scientific literature and technological documentation. (S1_W04) The graduate knows and understands the principles of functioning of devices and technical systems used in biotechnology of microorganisms, environmental biotechnology and environmental bioremediation. (S1_W05) The graduate understands the basic (bio) ethical and legal conditions related to the scientific, didactic and implementation activities in the field of applied microbiology. (S1_W06) The graduate can formulate and solve scientific and technological problems by conducting experiments, proper selection of sources and advanced research methods, and their critical evaluation in the light of current and acquired knowledge in the field of applied microbiology. Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Assessment criteria and pass conditions of classes: (i) attendance - maximum number of absences - 2 exercises; (ii) oral presentation of the results obtained during classes - preparation of 2 presentations. (iii) written colloquium. Assessment is based on the remote exam, which deals with all matters mentioned during lectures. Single choice test with the use of one of the tools available at the University of Warsaw - 60% of correct answers is needed to pass the exam. 2 absences allowed |
