Prerequisites (description): | Students should have a basic knowledge of coordinate systems and topographic maps. |
Mode: | Classroom |
Short description: |
The students will get acquinted with the basic reference systems as well as the scope and the content of topographic maps and databases (General Geographic Objects Database - BDOO and Topographic Objects Database - BDOT10k). The students also acquire the ability to calibrate topographic maps, transforming them from one to another reference system and analyze their content. |
Full description: |
Students become familiar with the Polish topographic maps, the reference systems and coordinate systems. Concepts connected to map properties, detail levels and cartographic generalization are discussed. An important issue is the comparison of Polish topographic maps in terms of different coordinate systems and the ability to transform a map between coordinate systems. The main characteristics of the Polish reference databases (General Geographic Objects Database BDOO and Topographic Objects Database BDOT10k) are presented and discussed. Within the scope of the practicals the students work on a project. In the first part of the practicals, students learn methods of old maps calibration and they are acquainted with the examples of the comparative analysis of the natural environment elements on old and contemporary maps and databases. Within the project part students work on a project (in groups of 3-4) concerning the comparison of old topographic maps (the nineteenth and early twentieth century) with contemporary maps. They assess the changes of the natural environment on both data sources. The task consists of two parts - first old maps calibration and the second map comparison. The main objective of this course is to prepare students to work with topographic maps from different periods and to train the ability of the usage of GIS programs for the purpose of the old and contemporary maps calibration and analysis. |

Skills – the sill of old maps calibration with the Osage of GI systems functionality, old and contemporary comparative analysis. Attitude - critical evaluation of own work results, the selection of appropriate tools for analysis. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
The course ends with written test assessment and project assessment The final evaluation of the course includes an assessment of the project (60%) as well as the assessment of the written test (40%). The attendance at exercises is obligatory. The student has the right to two unexcused absences during the classes. He should do these exercises on his own and show/sent the results to the person responsible for the exercises in one week time. |
