Prerequisites:

Meteorology and climatology 1900-1-MK

Prerequisites (description):

The student should have basic knowledge of meteorology and climatology as well as mathematics and statistics. Basic knowledge of Excel operation is also required.

Mode:

Classroom

Short description:

The main goal of the course is to provide knowledge about the methods of obtaining and processing meteorological data. Principles of compiling data relating to the basic elements of weather and meteorological phenomena are discussed.

Full description:

The lecture is to present traditional and modern sources of meteorological data, methods of assessing their homogeneity, data processing principles and the development of basic elements of weather and meteorological phenomena.

Classes are devoted to methods of compiling meteorological data with the use of computer techniques. During the course, students independently obtain meteorological data, which they then verify in terms of homogeneity and process using the methods and tools learned. As part of the exercises, students prepare characteristics of individual elements of weather and meteorological phenomena, using the mathematical and graphical methods of data presentation learned during the lectures.

The student's workload includes participation in the lecture (15 hours), exercises (30 hours), as well as own work - carrying out tasks during the classes and preparing to pass the lecture.

Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands

- terminology in the field of climatological research methods

- basic and complementary sources of climatological data

- methods of data quality assessment

- methods of data processing and presentation of results

Skills: the graduate can

- independently obtain meteorological data from repositories or databases

- define criteria for the selection and verification of source data in the context of various research problems

- select source data based on spatial or temporal criteria and metadata

- assess the quality of meteorological data and verify their homogeneity

- process and develop meteorological data by selecting an appropriate research method and using computer tools and techniques

- present the research results in graphic form and prepare a text description

- indicate methods of presenting research results adequate to the data used

Personal and social competences: the graduate is ready to

- understand the importance of scientific integrity and diligence in obtaining and processing meteorological data

- plan own work and its implementation, in accordance with the guidelines of the teacher and the requirements of the classes

- be aware of the difficulties and limitations resulting from the use of specific research methods or work with specific meteorological data

- use various data sources and data processing tools to present research issues and problems related to climatology and meteorology

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Classes are graded on the basis of the results of the final test from the lecture and the final grade from the exercises. Completing the exercises is a prerequisite for allowing the student to pass the lecture. The final grade for the subject is determined on the basis of the arithmetic mean of the lecture grade and the exercises grade.

Attendance at the exercises is obligatory. Two unexcused absences are allowed. The total number of absences (excused and unexcused) may not exceed 7. Absence from classes does not release the student from the obligation to complete all exercises and make up for the delayed assignments on the date indicated by the lecturer.
