  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Basiic knowledge of spatial development mechanisms on a local and regional scale. Basic knowledge of urban geography. Skills in using software for spatial analysis and visualization of spatial development arrangements.

Short description:

The course on Basics of spatial planning is implemented in the form of lectures and recitations. Lectures cover the theoretical foundations of spatial policy at various scales, issues related to the functioning of spatial planning systems in various European countries, and issues related to planning instruments. The recitations have the character of workshop classes. Students work in groups learning step by step the procedure of spatial development plan preparation and are oblidged to prepare a spatial development plan for a selected area of the city of Warsaw.

Full description:

Classes are held in the form of lectures and recitations of 30 and 15 hours, respectively. The subject of the lectures concerns spatial planning as an activity whose aim is to translate development programs into the organization of space in the sense of location of functions and appropriate spatial development. Planning issues in the lectures are discussed on a national, regional and local scale. The lectures also cover planning issues in the countries of the European Union. Recitations cover spatial planning issues on a local (municipality) scale, referring to the institutional organization of development management in Poland and the distribution of planning competences among various levels. During the recitations, students work in groups, preparing spatial development concepts for a selected area. The topics of the lectures are as follows:

• Spatial planning as an instrument for the implementation of development plans

• Legal and institutional conditions of planning processes

• Spatial planning at the national, regional and local level

• Conditions for effective spatial planning

• Spatial planning systems

• Spatial planning and spatial order

• Spatial planning in urban and rural areas

• Spatial planning and architectural and urban design

• Development control instruments in space

• Spatial planning and spatial development design
