  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Student has knowledge of socio-economic processes, knows the basic principles of shaping economic, service and residential spaces.

Short description:

During the course the students will get acquainted with

- the concepts of living conditions, standard of living and quality of life.

- factors shaping living conditions and quality of life in different reference systems

- examples of research on quality of life.

Full description:

The aim of the seminar is to familiarize participants with the concept of conditions, level and quality of life, and to show the differences in the meanings and methods of these concepts.

Through the analysis of available literature (including English-language literature), students will learn methods for studying the quality of life in different frames of reference - urban/rural, local and regional.

The classes also provide knowledge about the possibilities of shaping the conditions and quality of life in different reference systems.

An additional aim of the seminar is to show the changes in the conditions and quality of life in Poland and on selected foreign examples.

The extracurricular goal of the course is to gain skills in preparing presentations, oral communication of ideas, as well as participation in discussions and preparation of written work.

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE - the student knows:

1. notions of living conditions, level and quality of life and is able to choose appropriate methods to measure the phenomena

2. main research directions and achievements of contemporary socio-economic geography and understands relations between natural, social and economic sciences disciplines

3. complex social, political and cultural processes in urban communities and tourist regions

4. geographical concepts explaining the diversity of phenomena and processes affecting the diversity of urban and tourist space

5. advanced conceptual categories in the field of social geography

6. descriptive and mathematical statistics, methods of spatial analysis and qualitative research methods in urban or tourist space studies

7. the most important contemporary natural problems connected with urban or tourist space

8. the latest trends in the development of scientific research in the field of socio-economic geography in Poland and abroad, and has knowledge about the practical applications of scientific achievements in this field

SKILLS - the student is able to:

1. apply theoretical knowledge of socio-economic geography to describe and solve a research problem

2. apply optimal methods of acquiring, analysing and presenting data concerning spatial phenomena in the field of socio-economic geography

3. correctly interpret and explain mutual relations between social and natural phenomena and processes in urbanised or tourist areas

4. use critically scientific literature and other sources, also in English, in the field of socio-economic geography

5. present orally the results of research in socio-economic geography with the help of a properly developed presentation

6. plan and conduct research in socio-economic geography

7. prepare written papers on socio-economic geography based on literature and/or own research

8. use detailed terminology in the field of socio-economic geography in a foreign language at the B2+ level in free speech

9. independently plan their own academic or professional career in industries related to the city or tourism

COMPETENCIES - The student is prepared to:

1. broadening professional competences and updating knowledge in the field of socio-economic geography, enriched with an interdisciplinary dimension

2. co-operate and work in a group while completing research tasks and solving practical problems in the field of social and economic geography

3. dissemination of the achievements of socio-economic geography in the context of the social role of science

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

During class, each student is required to:

- preparing at least one presentation on a given topic (the number of presentations depends on the size and group)

- participation in discussions summarizing the presentations

- preparing written work on a given topic.

A prerequisite for passing the course is obtaining more than 50% of the points from each of the elements mentioned above. Exact scoring will be discussed in the first class.
