Prerequisites (description):

The twentieth century should be "the century of the child" (Ellen Key, 1900). In fact, it became a century in which the child and youth in a brutal manner used in a political propaganda. The lecture is an attempt to balance and critical response to this question by analyzing fragments of historical sources, including German moovies, 1920-1953.

Short description:

Both in Germany and in the Soviet Union, in the years 1930-1945 (1953), it was highly appreciated the role of the medium of cinema in shaping social attitudes. A political propaganda was very fond of children and youth show - as part of an optimistic, positive, constructive, as an essential part of creating a warm image of the leader, etc. The aim of the course is to analyze these treatments, the pores in the German and Soviet films.

Full description:

1. An image of the child, youth and physical culture in the parts of the movie "Ways to strength and beauty" (Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit, Germany 1925).

2. An image of an old and bad schools in the fragments of the film "Blue Angel" (Der Blaue Engel, Germany, 1930).

3. The role of youth and physical education in some parts of the German mountain film (starring Leni Riefenstahl) and Polish ("The white trail", 1932).

4. An image of the child, youth and educational message in the Nuremberg moovies and in the"Lowlands" (Tiefland), dir. Leni Riefenstahl.

5. The role of children and young people in some parts of the German newsreels (UFA-Tonwoche and Die Deutsche Wochenschau) from the years of World War II.

Note! The aim of the lectures is NOT to promote the Nazis, but a critical analysis of historical sources. Text of films will be simultaneously translated into Polish.

During the lectures, students become familiar with key topics, research questions, methods and workshop humanist work - for example, research on the history of children and youth in the propaganda of the twentieth century. Lectures are to develop in students the ability to think deeper humanistic - pedagogical and historical - as well as a knowledge of the historical criticism of the different types of source materials (textbooks, journals, moovies). The aim of the lectures is to further develop the skills of critical reading of the literature and the aspects of the scientific discussion on the history of childhood.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The pass mark for the course is next to the present, including active participation in class, to write and to pass an additional essay makes it possible to improve the assessment.
