ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

(in Polish) Niniejszy kurs dedykowany jest wszystkim studentom, którzy znają program MS Excel (m.in. umieją robić wykresy i formatować tabele, potrafią używać funkcji logicznych, tekstowych, czy wyszukiwania i adresu w Excelu, posługują się tabelami przestawnymi) i chcieliby nauczyć się pisania makropoleceń, czyli języka VBA.

Short description:

Many people every day working in the spreadsheet uses only the very basic functions of treating it as a more powerful calculator. The course aims to teach participants how they can automate your daily work in MS Excel with Macros - VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) programming. Effective use of the spreadsheet is automation our work to save time, that is wasted on routine tasks.

The course applies the motto Learnig by Doing. For each classes, students have to solve a new task, designed in such a way as to preserve their existing skills and learn new subjects. Numerous application examples discussed in class which facilitates their use in their work.

• Introduction to VBA Part 1 - record macros, design and code optimization; VBE – Visual Basic Editor.

• Introduction to VBA Part 2 - edit the code; objects - properties and methods; structures: With ... End With and For Each ... Next.

• Functions and formulas in VBA; dialog boxes: MsgBox and InputBox.

• Statement GoTo, Dir and structure If ... Then.

• For ... Next loop, Do ... Until and Do ... While.

• Example an application that imports data for sales reports from multiple stores to Excel, consolidates all accounts, create reports for individual product groups and stores them in separate files.

Note 1: classes are held in the form of e-learning on the platform: https://elearning.wne.uw.edu.pl (no live classes).

Note 2: The software version in the course is Microsoft Office 2019 or 365 (language version: English, operating system: Windows). Using an earlier version is possible, but it may cause some difficulties. The Polish language version is not a major problem, but the course a different operating system is (e.g. MacOS) due to the limitations of the Office suite (possible lack of necessary software components). The University of Warsaw does not provide participants with the necessary computer hardware or software.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course the student obtains the ability to efficiently use Excel and VBA. They will be able to use, build and modify macros, write and edit the VBA code to customize it to your needs, including define variables, conditional statements (If ... Then ... Else), loops (Do ... Loop), instructions (For ... Next), use dialog boxes.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The final evaluation consists of:

• Homework (60 pts.): two cumulative homework each scored 30 points.

• Questions and answers on the Discussion Forums: maximum 3 points for each post.
