  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;

Short description:

The lecture program includes the presentation of the history of behavior genetics, its location among other disciplines, basic theoretical assumptions and methods of the study of genetic and environmental determinants of differences between individuals in terms of personality, abilities and psychopathology.

Full description:

1. The "nature or nurture" controversy and its consequences. The emergence of behavior genetics. Brief description of the history of behavior genetics. Behavioral genetics and other scientific disciplines. Research approaches in behavior genetics.

2. Basic principles of behavior genetics. General characteristics of research methods. Twins and their role in the behavior genetic studies. Family studies and adoption method.

3. Genetic and environmental factors determining human behavior in normal and pathological conditions.

4. Genotype/environment interaction and correlation.

5. Linking evolutionary psychology and behavior genetics and its importance.

5. Methods of estimating the genetic influence on behavior.

6. The concept of heritability.

7. Heritability of personality traits. Heritability changes throughout life.

8. Heritability of intelligence. Wilson’s effect.

9. Heritability of mental disorders.

10. Heritability differences related to sex.
