Short description:

The aim of the course is to analyze selected political, social and media issues important in the history of the world, especially Europe, from the end of the 19th century to the present day. Particular attention is paid to aspects of political and ideological rivalry between superpowers and the problems of political effectiveness of media messages.

The course may be useful for people interested in political science, media, history, Europeanism, and to some extent also sociology and psychology.

Full description:

The aim of the course is to analyze selected political and social issues that are important in the history of the world, especially in Europe in the 20th century. The issues of communication in politics and problems of changes in the field of media coverage are treated with particular attention.

Issues such as East and West in European thinking, the complicated heritage of Europe, imperialism, the struggle of ideologies and armed struggle, the consequences of great wars, totalitarianism and democracy, the role of Germany and Russia/USSR in the recent history of Europe are considered.

The source basis are the speeches of well-known politicians and social activists, often expressed in the feeling of a breakthrough. An important material is also the conclusions drawn from the review of basic theses regarding normative media doctrines and communication theories, dominating in the 20th century.

The course may be useful for people interested in political science, media, history, Europeanism, and to some extent also sociology and psychology.

After completing the course, students:

KNOWLEDGE:

- knowledge of periodization and basic facts about the universal history of the twentieth century, especially about the history of Europe, its ideological aspects and the experience of totalitarianism

- references to these issues to the history of Poland

- orientation in terms of this subject

- knowledge of the regularity of relations between political leaders and public opinion as well as broadcasters of media messages with political allies and opponents, expert groups and public opinion.

SKILLS:

- independent analysis of politicians' public speeches and the meaning of their media message

- synchronization of textbook-type knowledge with conclusions drawn from the analysis of political and media sources

- generalization in assessing the meaning and consequences of individual historical events and current media reports on this subject

- diagnosis of the specificity of periods, sub-periods and individual events and generalization of the conclusions drawn from them.

OTHER COMPETENCES:

- insight in analyzing the speeches of politicians in various fora and in different circumstances

- comprehensive analysis of the media coverage of political events

- balanced comparisons of various or similar media and public reactions in changing political and social circumstances (climate issues and media governance)

- knowledge of the realities of the era shaping the conviction of the necessity of having historical knowledge and efficient by a modern educated person.
