Short description:

The seminar is focused on the history of 19th century Polish books and press set against the European background, the evolution and specific features of 19th century publications and most interesting and important events related to 19th century publishing and readership. The seminar enables students to meet original 19th century books and journals while the discussion of each issue listed above is accompanied with the demonstration and analysis of a number of objects – books and journals in different languages selected from the University of Warsaw Library historical collection.

The seminar is focused on the history of 19th century Polish books and press set against the European background, the evolution and specific features of 19th century publications and most interesting and important events related to 19th century publishing and readership. The following issues will be discussed: production of 19th century books and journals, structure of 19th century publication, introduction to 19th century book and press illustrations, specific elements of bibliographic records for 19th century books and journals, 19th century publisher and printer communities, development and specific features of 19th century collections as well as private and public libraries, evolution of 19th century press, 19th century editions of primary sources, old and contemporary literary texts, Bible, liturgical books, prayer books, devotional publications, the popular book market (adventure, historical and romance novels, science fiction and fantasy texts, horror books, crime and sensation stories), books for children and youth, manuals and reading tutorials, professional literature (natural sciences, medicine, mathematics, agriculture, etc.) The seminar enables students to meet original 19th century books and journals while the discussion of each issue listed above is accompanied with the demonstration and analysis of a number of objects – books and journals in different languages selected from the University of Warsaw Library historical collection.

When the course is finished, students are able to:

1) analyze and describe the structure of a given 19th century object (book, journal),

2) build the bibliographic record for 19th century book,

3) list most important Polish 19th century publishers and printers,

4) list most important Polish 19th century libraries and private collections,

5) compare various 19th century editions of primary sources and literary texts,

6) characterize 19th century popular book market,

7) explain the reasons for the evolution of 19th century books and press,

8) illustrate important phenomena in 19th century book market with appropriate examples of publications.
