  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

The main purpose of the course is to discuss key events, phenomena and changes of the Greek civilisation from the reign of ALexander the Great to the Roman conquest.

Short description:

“The name of Alexander marks the end of one age of the world, the beginning of another.” – these famous words of Johann Gustav Droysen, opening his 1830s groundbreaking “History of Hellenism” are hardly an exaggeration. Indeed, Alexander's conquest of Persia widened the horizons of the Greek world and brought many profound changes in Greek life.

Full description:

The main purpose of the course is to discuss key events, phenomena and changes of the Greek civilisation from the reign of Alexander the Great to the Roman conquest. It will approach the following themes:

1. The work-tool of the Hellenistic historian

2. The Macedonian kingdom under Alexander.

3. The Conquest.

4. The Successors.

5. Monarchies and Monarchic Ideas

6. Did the city-state die in the battle of Chaeronea?

7. The federalist boom.

8. Hellenistic Democracy

9.-12. Globalisation: foundation of new cities and transformation of old ones

Religious changes, intellectual exchange, religion.

13. Greeks and the Hellenized in the post-Alexander world.

14. Modernity of Antiquity?

15. The closing meeting (with a test).

Learning outcomes:

The student will recognize main facts, phenomena and institutions related to the reign of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic world

The student will name and explain the elements of Hellenistic period's heritage in later historical epochs and nowadays.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The essential prerequisite is attendance (the participants should be present during at least 80 % of classes).

The final grade will also depend on the results of the closing test.
