This lecture course will examine the political aspects of the history of Europe in the 19th century. The main political events will be presented against a background of social and cultural change. A special emphasis will be put on the transformation of the political culture. |

This lecture course will examine the political aspects of the history of Europe in the 19th century. The main political events will be presented against a background of social and political change. A special emphasis will be put on the transformation of the political culture. 1. The origins of the French Revolution. 2. The French Revolution: a liberal project? 3. The French Revolution: utopia and terror. 4. The Napoleonic state. 5. The expansion of the French empire. 6. Prussia: the Stein-Hardenberg reforms. 7. The Congress of Vienna. 8. The Holy Allience: ideology and praxis. 9. Great Britain: European policies and empire-building. 10. The Russian Empire and dilemmas of modernization. 11. The Springtime of the People: France. 12. The Springtime of the People: the Habsburg Empire. 13. The Second Empire in France: political experiments. 14. The establishment of the Kingdom of Italy. 15. The establishment of the German Empire. |
