Short description: |
The course is an introduction to the area of sex research and cultural creation of discourses of sex and sexual practices. It will seek to present, among others, such issues as: the development of sexology and knowledge of sexuality as a research area, various models of sex education, conceptualizing the interplay of sex and gender, the ways the sexual experience is discoursivized, defining sexual violence and abuse and pornography as a cultural phenomena. During the course, readings and discussion will be complemented by workshops with activists and researchers. |

The course is an introduction to the area of sex research and cultural creation of discourses of sex and sexual practices. It will seek to present, among others, such issues as: the development of sexology and knowledge of sexuality as a research area, various models of sex education, conceptualizing the interplay of sex and gender, the ways the sexual experience is discoursivized, defining sexual violence and abuse and pornography as a cultural phenomena. During the course, readings and discussion will be complemented by workshops with activists and researchers. |

Learning outcomes: |
Having finished the course, a student will: -have a basic working knowledge of the codependence of culture and sexuality -be able to point to ideological foundations of various notions of sexuality and sex research, and also to appraise their influence on the shaping of the public discourse -be able to critically participate in the public debate on the transformations of sexuality and the aspects of culture that are associated with it |

Assessment criteria: quality of discussion during classes. Additional assessment (for students not satisfied with their results): oral exam. |
