Classroom

Classes are elective. The student has a choice of different classes, where each lecturer offers exercises differently profiled in terms of the issues addressed. The register of proposed topics and readings for each group within a given academic cycle is available in detailed syllabuses prepared by lecturers and visible to students before the registration for classes. Possible use of e-learning platform.

Thematic blocks to be selected:

1. Selected problems of style theory, e.g.

Stylistics and semantics. Stylistics and poetics. Stylistic system according to the structuralist school. Pragmalinguistic and cognitive stylistics. Textology. Genology. Problem of speech genres according to various genological schools. Text as discourse. Thematic-rematic structure of statements. Coherence and cohesion. Nature of hypertext. Literary and electronic hypertext.

2. Stylistic variants of Polish language, e.g.

Stylistic diversification of Polish language. Characteristics of selected stylistic variants and species, useful in everyday communication, scientific, religious, official and other genres. Criteria for evaluation of genre and stylistically diversified texts. Conditions for successful implementation of the intended communication goals in texts diversified in style and genre.

3. Sociolects - socially conditioned language variants, e.g.

Typology and language structure of sociolects. Sociolects and general Polish. Main development trends within sociolectic vocabulary. Features of lexis of selected sociolects and the world of environmental values.

4. Efficient writing of utility texts, e.g.

Idea of plain language. Linguistic features of difficult texts. Tools supporting work on utility texts (e.g. Jasnopis, FOG-pl). Analysis and editing in terms of intelligibility of texts of a basic information function and/or addressed to a wide range of recipients (e.g. press articles, instructions, contracts, regulations, marketing texts, information materials from websites of offices, etc.).

5. Rhetoric, e.g.

Rhetorical figures and tropes – difference between figure and trope, metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche as relations of similarity, contact and partiality. Figures of words and figures of thoughts. Figures and tropes in literary and utility texts. Rhetorical value. Tools for rhetorical text analysis. Parts of text (parts of „speech” in a classical approach). Topic. Theory of argumentation. Eristic arguments. Syllogism, enthymeme. Inference (induction, deduction). Classic rhetoric, descriptive rhetoric, utility rhetoric (advertising, marketing, public relations). Receiver’s rhetoric. So-called forbidden rhetoric.

Depending on the chosen block:

Block 1

Students:

- are able to apply different linguistic concepts to analyze the style of a given text;

- are able to indicate similarities and differences between the approach to style in various linguistic schools, and indicate benefits for a language researcher from using a particular approach to style issues;

- distinguish cohesion and coherence, are able to indicate which element of them is disturbed in a given text;

- know how to analyze the thematic-rematic structure of particular sentences in a given text;

- are able to analyze utility genres in the light of various genological schools, are able to describe selected genres using the appropriate conceptual apparatus.

Block 2

Students:

- know basic stylistic terms, are able to define them and apply in practice (when analyzing texts);

- know what the functional styles analyzed during classes are characterized by, are able to analyze various texts;

- know criteria for the style assessment and is able to apply them in relation to texts;

- understand the essence of a stylistic error and indicate stylistic interference in texts.

Block 3

Students:

- understands what the specificity of social variants of language consists in;

- are able to indicate features that differentiate professiolect from sociolect;

- recognize lexical features typical of sociolectal variants analyzed during classes and are able to analyze them in the context of environmental culture using its language variant.

Block 4

Students:

- know how to formulate texts concerning socially or culturally important matters (such as information on national and public security, changes in law, medicine, leaflets, customer service correspondence) using plain language;

- know linguistic exponents of textual difficulty and recognize them in a specific text;

- know how to use tools that support work on simplifying texts (Jasnopis, FOG-pl);

- are able to work in a team as its moderator or contractor of the task entrusted to him;

- are able to listen to the advice of others and understand that this is the skill necessary for effective team work.

Block 5

Students:

- know in detail principles of distinguishing rhetorical figures and tropes;

- are able to recognize them not only in literary texts, but also in utility ones;

- know the basic terms of rhetoric theory and know how to use them in the text analysis;

- analyze the rhetorical value of phenomena learned in class;

- are able to carry out inference according to simple schemes;

- recognize eristic arguments and are able to defend against them;

- know how to apply the concept of topos to the text analysis;

- are able to use various rhetorical tools regarding the texts they encounter in everyday life.

Classes end with a written work in a formula and according to the rules proposed by teachers. The minimum required to pass is 60%. Two absences per semester are allowed. Above this number (excluding cases immediately documented) there is no possibility to pass classes.
