The student should have basic knowledge of Polish linguistics. They should know and understand linguistic terminology and the basics of linguistic research methodology.

The seminar concerns the contemporary Polish language, in particular: the newest Polish lexis. Students will gain knowledge and skills regarding various ways of describing the lexical system of the Polish language (in connection with the grammatical system and the functioning of the language in society). The description material is the newest Polish lexicon. The aim is to prepare students to write a linguistic bachelor's thesis on contemporary/ recent/ the newest Polish lexis.

Detailed issues discussed during the seminar concern the thematic fields covered by the latest Polish language (on the example of the dictionary of Polish neologisms of the Language Observatory of the University of Warsaw), word-formation tendencies occurring in the newest lexis/ contemporary Polish, relations between language units, types of new lexical units, more difficult issues in the normative description of the newest Polish language, a contemporary codified norm, attitudes of contemporary Poles towards the language, sociolects currently functioning in the Polish language and methods of description of them, expressive and axiological characterization of the contemporary Polish language. Students will therefore acquire knowledge and skills related to lexicology, lexicography, elements of semantics, synchronic word formation, normative linguistics, sociolinguistics, stylistics and pragmalinguistics. This will allow them to come into contact with both linguistic topics and instruments that they will be able to apply when writing their own thesis. Students will also encounter (on selected examples taken from study papers) the problem of collecting material, limiting its scope (selection), and describing it (categorization) from a certain (selected) perspective.

The selection of topics may change depending on the cycle of education.

After completing the seminar, the student:

KNOWLEDGE

- knows the specifics of the newest Polish vocabulary

- knows and understands the terminology, theories and methodologies of research in the field of linguistics, useful in lexicological and cultural-linguistic analyzes

- knows and understands consistent methods of lexical material analysis

SKILLS

- is able to problematize lexicological or cultural-linguistic issues being the subject of his work, select appropriate research methods for them and apply them

- is able to independently collect and select the linguistic (empirical) material that is the subject of the analysis

- can interpret the results of their own analyzes and place them against the background of data from the literature on the subject

- can correctly formulate conclusions from the analysis of the material

- is able to conduct research work at the basic level under the supervision of a scientific supervisor

SOCIAL COMPETENCE

- is ready for individual work and group cooperation, consisting in conducting discussions and exchanging opinions based on available theoretical and material data

- is ready to independently undertake and initiate simple research activities

- is ready to effectively organize their own work and to critically assess its advancement

- is ready to conduct scientific work in accordance with the principles of intellectual honesty

The student is obliged to be present and active during the classes. In the first semester, two absences from classes are allowed, in the second semester one absence is allowed. The basis for passing the seminar is the ongoing control of the progress of the BA thesis (gathering and selection of material, classification, use of theoretical tools, description of the material, development of the theoretical and analytical part of the thesis). A prerequisite for passing the bachelor's seminar is submitting the final (corrected, ready for BA exam) version of the thesis and its acceptance by the supervisor.

Assessment methods and criteria may be modified depending on the cycle of education.
