Short description:

The interdisciplinary course on the basics of antrophonymy deals with the issues of linguistic and cultural development of first and last name – two most important, today obligatory, units which identify a person.

During the course students will refute the myth about the „nobility” of all last names ending with -ski, -cki, while at the same time they will discover the source of this myth and will learn to distinguish between names given to real nobility and those which had undergone secondary ennoblement.

The course deals with the issues on the border of linguistics, cultural studies, religious studies, psycho – and sociolinguistics and history. In order to meet your expectations concerning your interests in terms of science as well as hobby – it leaves its mark, among others, on a very popular today genealogical search. Therefore, it is directed to those who want to discover the sources and methods of research on the history of first and last names.

Class 1. Onomastics and antrophonymy as interdisciplinary sciences.

Class 2. Sources for the antrophonymic research.

Class 3. Dictionaries and the necessary onomastics literature - where and how to find information about first and last names.

Class 4. First names - theoretical issues, legal circumstances, classifications.

Class 5. First name as a part of language:

• Linguistic structure of inherited names;

• rules concerning the adaptation of foreign names to Polish language;

• diminutive forms of first names – ways of their creation;

Class 6. First name as an element of culture:

• first name and religion;

• motivation behind giving names to children in the past and today;

• double first names;

• social diversity of names.

Class 7. Last names – theoretical issues, legal circumstances, classifications.

Class 8. Last names as an element of language:

• word-formation research;

• features of local dialects reflected in last names.

Class 9. Last names of peasantry.

Class 10. Last names of nobility.

Class 11. Last names of burghers.

Class 12. Last names of Jews in Poland.

Class 13. Last names of wives and daughters.

Class 14. Geographical diversity of last names.

Class 15. Other antrophnymies: nick names, pseudonyms.

After the completion of the course the student:

KNOWLEDGE:

• indicates the most important motivation behind giving first names to children in the past and today;

• enumerates the definition features of last name;

• names and describes various classifications of first and last names;

SKILLS:

• is able to match properly the sources to antrophonymic research and conduct a selection with regard to the subject matter of the research;

• is able to use properly the most important antrophonymic dictionaries as well as general dictionaries and dictionaries of local dialects of Polish language, as an auxiliary material for the research on last names;

• is able to classify first and last names to individual groups of classification;

• indicates most important dialectal features reflected in last names;

• indicates the differences in the processes of development of last names in respective social and religious groups in Poland (peasantry, burghers, nobility, Jews);

• indicates extralinguistic factors influencing the linguistic development of last names.

BASICS:

• treats first and last names as an element of national heritage;

• accepts the need of paying attention to the registration of first and last names.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:
