Basic knowledge about contemporary Polish literature and/or methodology of teaching foreign languages is welcome yet not necessary.

Short description:

Seminar on the role of literature, especially contemporary one, in teaching Polish as a foreign/second/heritage language. Classes are intended for students of Polish philology at for everyone interested in teaching Polish to foreigners and in introducing them to Polish literature.

Full description:

During classes, basic theoretical readings on the role of literature, especially contemporary prose, in the process of teaching Polish as a foreign/second/heritage language will be analyzed. Different methodological approaches to literary texts in a language classroom will be discussed as well.

It will provide the course participants with solid theoretical knowledge that will enable them to introduce fragments of literary texts in their own classroom. Students will be able to put this knowledge in practice later in the semester while analyzing in detail in class six chosen contemporary Polish novels, which represent different literary trends, genres and styles, from the point of view of teaching Polish to foreigners.

Discussions about the concrete fragments of the chosen novels will be followed by attempts to create coherent and well thought-through lesson plans, including different types of exercises, such as vocabulary exercises, reading comprehension exercises, as well as activities aimed at developing speaking and writing skills.

Learning outcomes:

After the course, students will:

I. know:

– basic theoretical literature on introducing literary texts in the process of teaching Polish as a foreign/second/heritage language,

– main methodological approaches to literary texts in classes of Polish as a foreign/second/heritage language;

– several important and representative contemporary Polish novels;

II. be able to:

– analyze literary texts from the point of view of their usefulness in the process of teaching Polish as a foreign/second/heritage language,

– prepare a coherent lesson plan and adequate exercises based on a fragment of a chosen contemporary Polish novel;

III. be aware of:

– the special role of literature as a medium of cultural content in the process of teaching foreign languages,

– promulgating Polish literature among people learning Polish as a foreign/second/heritage language.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

– regular attendance (maximum two absences per semester allowed),

– continuous assessment (preparation for classes, participation in discussions in class),

– final paper: preparing a lesson plan and exercises based on a fragment of a chosen contemporary Polish novel.
