Short description:

A seminar in English on contemporary Polish culture for foreign students. Classes consist in analyzing and interpreting two contemporary Polish novels (in English translation) and fragments of several important Polish movies from the last two decades, on the background of Polish history and culture.

Full description:

Students are required to read two indicated contemporary Polish novels in English translation and watch fragments of several Polish movies (with English subtitles). These materials will be made available for students by the professor. The chosen works illustrate important phenomena and issues of contemporary Polish society.

Each class will start with a short lecture accompanied by an audiovisual presentation meant to put discussed works in a broader historic and cultural context, as well as provide students with adequate interpretation tools. The rest of the class will be dedicated to discussion on the chosen novels and movies.

Each literary work and each film will be thoroughly analyzed in detail in class with the professor’s guidance. Students are expected to actively participate in classes.

The following topics will be covered:

1. The Impact of the History on Contemporary Polish Society.

2. Self-Stereotypes of Poles and Polish Clichés about Neighbouring Nations.

3. Major Social Problems in Poland.

4. Gender Roles in Poland.

5. Social Classes in Poland.

6. Polish Cities Versus Polish Province.

7. Natural Environment and Ecology in Poland.

8. Polish Traditions, Rituals, and Celebrations.

After attending the course students will:

– get acquainted with important contemporary Polish novels and movies;

– discover and understand major phenomena and problems of contemporary Polish society;

– develop their critical thinking and analytical skills;

– improve their research and academic writing skills.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

– Attendance and Preparation for Classes (homework, quizzes, active participation in classes; only two absences allowed per semester) – 40%,

– Final Paper – 40%,

– Final Test – 20%.
