Prerequisites (description): | The aim of the class is to continue familiarizing the students with Old Church Slavonic grammar, including its relations with Proto-Slavic and other Slavonic languages. Prerequisites: the students should know basic OCS grammar. |

Full description: |
Individual meetings will be devoted to: Morphology: affixes; the root in Indo-European and Proto-Slavic. OCS declension (nouns, adjectives, pronouns, numerals). The verb: PIE and OCS inflections; verb roots, grammatical aspect; modes, tenses; the infinitive and the supinum; participles. Indeclinabilia. Important specific qualities of OCS syntax in context of Slavonic languages. Once the grammar are covered, further meetings will be devoted to text analysis. |

Learning outcomes: |
Having completed the course, the students should be able to: translate an OCS text, know the rules of simplified and phonetic transcription, perform a morphological analysis of given words; reconstruct Proto-Slavic forms. Upon course completion, the students should additionally be able to: - critically approach various research methods and theses included in theoretical texts, - use research methods pertaining to various disciplines within the scope of humanities and form a well-grounded synthesis thereof as part of a multi-aspect study in culture and language of a selected Slavic country, - be aware of the complexities of the nature of a language as well as the shifting of meanings throughout history. |
