ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The lecture shows how the language can contribute to one’s wellbeing as well as cause damage. From the ethical perspective the language can be an element that works both for and against community and its values. The main aim of the lecture is to discuss the principles of ethical communication and violations of its rules in the public space, as well as social consequences of the unethical use of the language. The lecture is to familiarize students with the ethical standards of the language, show the importance of these standards in the development of community communication and to prepare for the partnership and ethical communication with other members of the community.

Full description:

1. Ethics of language and communication. Linguistic and philosophical fundamentals of the ethics of language.

2. Models of ethical communication. Ideas of P. Grice, J.R. Searle, P. Brown and S.C.Levinson, J.Habermas’s concept of deliberative democracy. The model of communication by J.Puzynina and A.Pajdzińska. Rationality and success of communication and ethics.

3. Human subjectivity and standards of ethical communication. Human dignity seen through the perspective of their multidimensionality and autonomy.

4. Domination, violence and dogmatism in communication. Why does the public speech not respect the rules of ethical language?

5. Unethical language strategies based on reduction.

6. How are the main narratives created? What limits one’s cognitive sovereignty? The responsibilities of the sender and the receiver in the communication.

7. The combative strategy of the language. How to create an enemy and what benefits does it bring?

8. Ethics of language and political correctness. Ethics of language and language etiquette.

9. What is the freedom of speech and its responsibilities? How one can influence the ethics of communication?

10. Why can’t some arguments end on a compromise? The analysis of Polish public disputes.

Learning outcomes:

Having completed the course the student:

- knows the rules of ethical communication

– can distinguish between ethical and unethical communication

– can analyze an utterance in terms of the ethics of the language, explain why it is unethical or why it is only seemingly harmful

- knows the strategies of unethical valuation

- can create a negative utterance that meets the standards of ethical communication

- considers people they talk with or talk about as partners

Finding examples – 5 per semester, analytical final paper – 15 hours

Studenci są oceniani za udział w wykładzie oraz za pisemną analizę zaobserwowanych przez siebie wypowiedzi publicznych pod kątem etyczności i poprawności komunikacyjnej.
