Prerequisites (description): | Some general knowledge on the linguistic situation of the region is expected as well as basic knowledge of one East Asian language will be suggested, however this is not a condition excluding from attending the course |

The lecture is intended as an introduction to methodological and theoretical aspects of East Asian languages and their investigation with special attention payed to their mutual contacts and the cultural sphere of Chinese script |

The course is intented for faculty and doctoral students majoring not only in philology and culture studies but also humanities in general or even other fields of study provided they are interested in theoretical and contrastive linguistics covering the area of languages of East Asia, such as Chinese with its varieties, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Laotian, Burmese and other; the course topics planned for the coming year includes such East Asian linguistic phenomena as language and culture, linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics, with some particular problems such as graphemics, phonetics with phonology and prosody, semantics, pragmatics, and lexicology. During the course some presentations of recent research projects by staff members, Ph.D. candidates and researchers connected with the Department of General and East Asian Linguistics and the Centre for Polish-Japanese Lexicography, the presentations will include also typologico-monographic descriptions of particular East Asian languages |

Learning outcomes: |
After completing the course students will gain knowledge on the methodological aspects of the East Asian linguistics and typological foundation of the investigation of the languages of the region concerning their grammatical; structure, including the area traditional and modern research on the relations between language and script Students are able to discuss selected problems of East Asian linguistics within a wider area of humanities |
