The classes are devoted to the presentation of Polish – Lithuanian literary and cultural relationships in the years 1864-1939 taking into account the cultural and ideological changes that occurred at this time in the relationship between these two nations. Participants of the course will learn about the role of themes related to Lithuania within the heritage of the Polish writers of that period, as well as the regional face of positivism, modernism and avant-garde on the territory of the late Grand Principality of Lithuania (press, theater, art).

Short description:

The classes are devoted to the presentation of Polish – Lithuanian literary and cultural relationships in the years 1864-1939 taking into account the cultural and ideological changes that occurred at this time in the relationship between these two nations. Participants of the course will learn about the role of themes related to Lithuania within the heritage of the Polish writers of that period, as well as the regional face of positivism, modernism and avant-garde on the territory of the late Grand Principality of Lithuania (press, theater, art). The discussion during the classes aims at better understanding of the specificity of cultural relations and the ways of interpretation of literature in the context of the Lithuanian national revival.

Full description:

Classes are supposed to:

• deepen the knowledge gained during the course about the history and of Polish literature (in the regional version of positivism, modernism and avant-garde);

• to show the role of literature in creating and consolidating the nineteenth century cultural myths on Polish and Lithuanian side;

• synthetically show similarities and differences in treatment of the above issues in the literature of both nations, resulting from the genre, style, type of narrative, the direction of literary or historical conditions.

Introductory part will present the historical context of Polish-Lithuanian literary and cultural relations (the origin and meaning), including the specificity of Polish strategies of mythologizing Lithuanian history and territory. Participants of the course will learn about the role of themes related to Lithuania within the heritage of the Polish writers of that period, as well as the regional face of positivism, modernism and avant-garde on the territory of the late Grand Principality of Lithuania (press, theater, art). During the analysis of selected works students perfect their skills of critical interpretation of texts and learn about the possibility of applying concepts from other areas of the humanities useful to assess the literary phenomenon. Furthermore, participants will learn about the basics (classic) and new works about the topic of the course with particular emphasis on comparative studies.

As a result a student gains knowledge of the following issues:

1. the methodology of research into the connections in literature and culture, applied to the literature of the second half of nineteenth century andand the first decades in the 20th (status and prospects of research, new works accepted in the literary methods of analysis, descriptions and interpretation of events relevant to the cultural development of Polish and Lithuanian culture in this period);

2. Means of functioning of ideological heritage of “Lithuanian school” of romanticism in Polish literature and art in 1864-1939 period and the trends of its modification in the view of philosophical and aesthetic assumptions of positivism, modernism and avant-garde;

3. the role of the close connection of literature and art (painting, music, theater, photography) in shaping the typical late nineteenth and early twentieth century philosophical and aesthetic attitudes in Polish and Lithuanian culture.

Upon finishing the course a student:

KNOWLEDGE

1. describes and deeply and comprehensively analyzes the origins and the directions of development of Polish-Lithuanian literary and cultural relations in the years 1864-1939

2. interprets literary works from the perspective of different methodological approaches, with the knowledge of the most recent literary lines of thought

SKILLS

3. analyzes literary work in the context of literature of a given time, taking into account historical and social background of the period, formulates competent statements about it

4. prepares a paper on the basis of individually collected references

5. has an ability to draw conclusions, discuss, formulate opinions and arguments about statements devoted to historical and literary issues.

ATTITUDE

6. perceives Polish literature related to Lithuania as a result of literature and culture of the time,

7. perceives literature as an important tool for exploration of the cultural characteristics of a community, understands the relationship between literature and other areas of life.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Form of classes - classroom/Google (depending on current regulations). Classes will involve working in groups, developing skills in reading and understanding scholarly texts through discussion, presenting and arguing one’s views on some topic of literature, preparing class papers with the aid of multimedia techniques.

Continuous assessment (preparedness and in-class activity) – 50%,

presentation of an essay – 40%, attendance – 10%.
