Prerequisites (description):

The aim of the course is to introduce students with the knowledge concerning material culture and cultural processes in the barbarian Europe of the proto-historical period.

Short description:

During the course there are presented archaeological sources important to know the weapons and fighting techniques in Barbarian Europe in the Iron Age (from the La Tene Period to the Migration Period), i.e., weapons from bog sites in Scandinavia, grave equipment, settlements, hillforts but also wrecks.

During the course there are presented archaeological sources, important to know the weapons and fighting techniques in Barbarian Europe in the Iron Age (from the La Tene Period to the Migration Period), i.e., weapons from bog sites in Scandinavia, grave equipment, settlements, hillforts but also wrecks. Iconographical and written sources are dealt with too. Phenomena from outside the borders of ancient civilisations are presented during the lectures: from Celtic world, Dacia, Germania, Sarmatia, also Balt tribes area. The most important topics are reconstruction of weapon sets and its use (tactics) as well as hierarchy or sacral use of weapons. Roman military equipment is presented as a background. Concurrently one could get to know about tactics, strategy and battleships used in ancient civilisations and barbarian cultures. Additionally such matters as the archaeology of battlefields or development of weapons are described.

Learning outcomes:

Capturing the knowledge concerning cultural phenomena and processess in Barbaricum during protohistorical period.

Student should be aware of complexity of human culture and differentiation of points of view on particular matters and phenomena; he should know his level of knowledge and the need for improving it and understand the fact that achievements of the other scientific disciplines should be used in acrhaeology.
