Short description:	The course presents the development of political anthropology from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. It first discusses the roots of political anthropology in political philosophy of the 17th-19th centuries. Subsequently, the course presents British political anthropology from structural functionalism to the actionist and processual approaches of the 1960s. Then it moves on to the challenges posed to political anthropology by colonialism and decolonialisation, modernisation theory and the development discourse, globalization, socialism, and post-socialism. Particular attention is paid to the anthropology of the state. Toward the end of the semester, the recent turn to 'anarchist anthropology' is outlined.
Full description:	1) Outline of the course. 2) The roots of political anthropology in early-modern and Enlightenment philosophy. 3) Marxism and evolutionism. 4) British structural-functionalism and political anthropology. 5) The Manchester school, actionism and processualism in the 1940s-1960s. 6) Colonialism and post-colonialism. 7) The 'political turn' in anthropology after 1968. Michel Foucault's influence on political anthropology. 8) Modernization theory, the world-systems paradigm, and political anthropology. 9) Domination and resistance in political anthropology in the 1980s-1990s. 10) The anthropology of socialism and post-socialism. 11) The anthropology of the state, part 1: from evolutionism to the Marxism on the 1970s. 12) The anthropology of the state, part 2: from Michel Foucault to current developments. 13) "Fragments of an anarchist anthropology." 14) Summary of the course.

Learning outcomes:	(in Polish) Umiejętności ogólne: Student potrafi posługiwać się językiem charakterystycznym dla antropologii politycznej, zna podstawowe pojęcia, klasyfikacje i idee. Umiejętność tę może wykorzystać do pisania projektów badawczych i animacyjnych, do pisania tekstów publicystycznych, do prowadzenia relacji publicznych instytucji, do podjęcia pracy w instytucjach związanych ze strukturami władzy lokalnej i centralnej. Umiejętności konkretne: Student umie zaprezentować podstawowe informacje dotyczące zjawisk politycznych w perspektywie antropologicznej. Potrafi opisać wybrane teorie w filozofii politycznej od czasów nowożytnych po współczesnosć, podając autorów. Jest w stanie scharakteryzować różne metody opisu zjawisk politycznych. Umie objaśnić pojęcia takie jak kolonializm, dekolonizacja i orientalizm. Rozumie takie kategorie jak dominacja czy opór i potrafi przytoczyć przykłady społecznego oporu wraz z informacją o publikacjach, z których pochodzą. Posiada informacje umożliwiające objaśnienie pojęć takich jak wiedza/władza, rządomyślność, przemoc symboliczna oraz krótkie informacje o ich autorach. Zna podstawowe założenia teorii modernizacji i teorii systemów-swiatów, podając nazwiska autorów. Rozumie racje antropologicznej krytyki dyskursu rozwojowego oraz potrafi przytoczyć badania, które tę krytykę uzasadniają. Jest w stanie opisać z użyciem pojęć antropologicznych proces postsocjalistycznej transformacji. Potrafi objaśnić pojęcie globalizacja i pokazać jej kulturowe konsekwencje, zwłaszcza te dotyczące relacji władzy. Jest zaznajomiony z podstawami antropologicznej refleksji nad państwem.
