  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Short description:

The course will address the problem of transformations within the Greek polis on Athenian and Spartan examples, divided into two groups. The first part of the problem concerns evolutionary changes within society, with special consideration given to situation of women. The other part concerns political changes and means of their ideological justification.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course student:

- knows history of socio-political transformations in Greek poleis

- knows historical context of the problems discussed

- can nominate the main problems concerning socio-political changes in polis

- knows Spartan and Athenian history in the Classical and Hellenistic age

- knows differences in men’s and women’s realities in the Greek polis

- understands political determinants of actions taken by the statesmen

- critically analyzes ancient literary sources

- joins the source material into chains of events and critically interpret them

- takes stance toward the main theses of the modern historiography concerning transformation in the polis

- finds the information needed within the sources

- searches for sources of information

- critically approaches sources of information

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Evaluation will be based on student’s work during the course, these are activity and its quality.

2 absences are permitted, the third means failure to pass the course.

Being unprepared will be treated as an absence.
