  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;

Short description:

The topic of the lecture refers to the history of the ideas and arts of the Nordic countries from prehistoric ages to the 20th century. The lecture will be focused on the most important examples of Nordic thought, architecture, paintings, just to underline the features of Scandinavian culture.

Full description:

The topic of the lecture refers to Nordic history in general, the history of the ideas and arts of the Nordic countries from prehistoric ages to the 20th century. First lectures of the course will be focused upon Viking arts and mythology of the Viking age, and the specific structure of Nordic cosmogony. The subject of medieval ideas is based on the evolution of the cult of St. Olav, and its role within Nordic culture. Original Nordic art in the medieval era will be discussed through various examples of Roman and Gothic church architecture. Modern times will be presented with two general subjects: Nordic legendary historiography and absolutist 18.th century propaganda of the monarchy. 19th century will be dominated by Scandinavian Romantic philosophy and national arts. The times of general modernization and the rise of modern national idea include the evolution of a new popular Lutheran ideology and revivalism. A special attention will be paid to Soren Kierkegaard. The course will conclude with an overview of 20th century arts.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student is introduced to the basic knowledge on Scandinavian history, and its role in formation of various ideas and art.

Upon completion of the course, the student recognizes and is capable to analyse various examples within the history of ideas and arts in the Nordic countries.
