Full description: |
There is no Polish (or English) outline of changes in the medieval German Reich written to university standard. The lack of knowledge of the history of such important neighbour and agent provides a sufficient justification for the lecture. The subject of the lecture is political history and the development of imperial ideology set as the background for the evolution of the state and societies of the German lands within a European context. The changes occurring in the German Reich from the 10th to the 14th century determined the specific shape of the German statehood. A universalistic empire with the hegemonic position in the Latin world evolved into the varying complex of territorial lordships (Landesherrschaften) with its monarch basing his power mainly upon the domains of his family. The modernisation of state structures meant for the majority of European states the emergence of national estate monarchies. In the German Reich, however, due to the chain of various events, the changes in the organisation of political and territorial power occurred mainly within particular principalities. It was only in the 15th century that an estate project of imperial reform was formulated and its realisation in 1495 and at later Reichstags resulted in temporary strengthening of common institutions effective beyond the limits of the different principalities. The lectures are planned for two semesters; the cut-off date is the Great Interregnum of 1256–1273. They are based on the latest state of knowledge on the subject. |
