The course is to introduce the students to the history of the western part of the classical Islamic world - from the fall of the Umayyad caliphate of Cordoba in 1031 until the fall of Granada in 1492, marking the end of Muslim states in the Iberian Peninsula. An emphasis will be put upon social and cultural questions, not on political history in the strict sense. It is the lecturer's intention to enable the students to understand the uniqueness of al-Andalus and North Africa in the classical Islamic world. |
