From Modern Ruins to Urban Memory: Architecture and Art

This introductory and interdisciplinary course requires

no background in architectural history. It addresses the

problems of the place of architecture in modern

systems of the visual arts and contemporary visual

culture. The history of modern and contemporary

architecture (from 1800 to the present) is closely

related to the history of painting, sculpture,

photography, film, and performance.

The course provides an interdisciplinary interpretation

of the history of architecture and the visual arts from

1800 to the present, i.e., from the late Enlightenment to

the first avant-garde movements and contemporary

phenomena. It interprets modern architecture and art

histories in Europe and North America.

The course includes the themes such as:

Students are expected to write a short essay (max. 2000

words) on a topic of their choice falling within the scope

of lectures.
